DESCRIPTION

The 1992 first edition of Mitchell Tolle: American Artist, a 168-page hardcover monograph on the Kentucky painter Mitchell Tolle with text by Garry G. Barker, published by Painted Treasures, Inc. of Berea, Kentucky (ISBN 0-9644951-0-4). This copy is signed and inscribed by Tolle in ink on the front free endpaper. The sage-green boards carry a pasted-on reproduction of a Tolle landscape on the front and a portrait panel on the rear.

WORTH NOTING

  • First edition, first printing, Painted Treasures, Inc., Berea, Kentucky, 1992; 168 pages of colour reproductions of Tolle's paintings and drawings.
  • Text by Garry G. Barker, the Kentucky author and long-time Berea College crafts director.
  • Signed and inscribed by Mitchell Tolle in black ink on the front endpaper, with a personal dedication.
  • Oblong quarto hardcover with sage-green pictorial boards; no dust jacket is present in the photographs.
  • Era: 1992 publication, confirmed by the title page and publisher records.
  • Printed on heavy coated stock so the watercolours reproduce with their original saturation.
  • The inscription names a previous owner; this is a personal association copy rather than a flat-signed one.

MEASUREMENTS

Approx. 12" W × 10.5" H × 1" thick, estimated from photographs; 168 pages. Seller lists a 6 lb shipping weight.

CONDITION

Very good. Boards are clean and square with light shelf wear to the edges and a small area of rubbing at the spine ends visible in the photographs; the pasted-on cover image is bright and unscratched. Interior pages appear clean and tight with no foxing seen. Signed and inscribed in ink; no dust jacket.

FROM THE HOUSE

Tolle paints the Kentucky that the interstate never sees — a stone bridge in winter light, a farmer's face — and this book is the only serious survey of his work. It was printed properly, on paper heavy enough to do the watercolours justice, which is why copies still look this good thirty years on.

The inscription is to someone else, of course, but that is the pleasure of a signed copy: the artist sat with this book for a moment. Our storefront's signed shelf is small and chosen slowly; ask if you would like the inscription photographed legibly. ~ Maxwell
