DESCRIPTION

A handsome 1970s Springfield Instrument Company wall weather station, made in the USA and arranged as a traditional three-instrument panel for measuring temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity.

Set vertically into a dark stained wood plaque, the instruments are framed by substantial brass-tone square bezels with clipped, campaign-inspired corners. The upper dial is a dual-scale Fahrenheit and Celsius thermometer; the larger center instrument is an aneroid barometer marked for changing weather conditions; and the lower dial measures relative humidity.

The restrained dark wood and aged brass give the piece considerably more character than the familiar later plastic weather stations. It has the look of an old study instrument — equally comfortable among books, maps and collected objects in a library, office or gentleman's study.

Designed for wall display, with hanging hardware to the reverse.

WORTH NOTING

The instrument faces are marked Springfield and Made in U.S.A.

Springfield Instrument Company produced a variety of domestic weather instruments during the mid-to-late twentieth century. We have not located sufficient documentation to assign this particular case style a model number, so we have conservatively dated it to the 1970s based upon its construction, styling and comparison with documented Springfield instruments of the period.

Unless you have actually tested these against known instruments, we should specifically say that accuracy has not been verified. These should be sold as vintage instruments/decor rather than promising meteorological accuracy.

MEASUREMENTS

Approximately 13.5" high × 4.75" wide × 1.5" deep.

Measurements are approximate.

CONDITION

Pre-owned vintage condition with age-appropriate wear to the wood finish, brass-tone fittings and instrument faces.

The instruments display readings; however, their individual accuracy has not been independently calibrated or verified and no guarantee of precision is made.

Please review photographs closely for the condition of the wood, bezels, glass, dials and reverse.

FROM THE HOUSE

Long before weather arrived by notification, a proper study might have had its own instruments quietly keeping watch.

We liked this Springfield particularly for its proportions — dark wood, aged brass and three beautifully ordered dials make it as much an object for the library as a practical weather station.
